The Lake Below Bella Collina Keeps Weekend Hours This Fall

October 29, 2026

This fall the trail, the Wildlife Drive and several miles of shoreline each run on their own clock. The St. Johns River Water Management District owns most of the public land around the lake, and right now its schedules overlap fully on just three days a week: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

That makes the lake below Bella Collina a weekend lake through the end of 2026. December is when the restoration work is scheduled to wrap up, Orange Audubon's birding festival arrives, and Montverde turns on its holiday lights.

A Lake Worth the Weekend

The lake's recovery is the reason this fall is worth planning around. The St. Johns River Water Management District's Lake Apopka project page reports that phosphorus concentrations have fallen 66% since the late 1980s, and water clarity had improved 52% as of March 2026. In 2022, the annual average phosphorus level dropped below the District's target for the first time.

Clearer water let sunlight reach the lake bottom, and submerged aquatic vegetation has grown back after being absent for 50 years. That growth is rebuilding the habitat bass depend on. The District hasn't left it to nature. With state partners, it has planted 174 acres of eelgrass and Illinois pondweed in the lake since 2021, more than 880,000 plants in all. A separate project put in 28,382 lilies and lotus across more than 10 acres. The District also says recent fishing tournaments in the Upper Ocklawaha River Basin Chain of Lakes have included Lake Apopka, and it describes the bass caught there as impressive in size and number.

The recovery has had setbacks. A drought that began in summer 2025 kept water levels below the regulation schedule for many months, and phosphorus rose during that stretch. The District reports that the native vegetation kept spreading anyway. A lake in that condition is still in repair, and the repair work is what currently sets the public's access schedule.

Why the Calendar Narrows to Friday Through Sunday

Three separate schedules decide when you can get out on the North Shore this season.

The first is the Wildlife Drive's standing rule. Its 11-mile, one-way route starts at 2850 Lust Road in Apopka and ends on Jones Avenue. Cars can enter only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays, between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., and every vehicle must be out by 5 p.m. At the posted 10 mph limit, the District estimates the drive takes one to three hours. Vehicles are capped at 25 feet, and trailers are not allowed.

The second is a new trail closure. On Oct. 20, the District posted that the Lake Apopka Loop Trail between Laughlin Road and the Limpkin Point Kiosk would be closed Monday through Thursday for up to two months while construction continues. If the work runs the full two months, weekday walks and rides on that segment are off the table into late December. The same notice says the Wildlife Drive remains open and is not affected.

The third is the weather. Heavy rain closed the Drive to cars Oct. 9 through 12, including Columbus Day, when it would normally have been open. The District's closure notice explained that wet roads under heavy holiday-weekend traffic risked costly damage to recent road improvements. The Loop Trail and pedestrian gates stayed open throughout.

Here is how the three line up over a typical week this fall:

Day Wildlife Drive, by car Loop Trail, Laughlin Rd. to Limpkin Point
Monday to Thursday Closed to vehicles Closed for construction
Friday to Sunday Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. entry Open
Federal holidays Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. entry Closure days apply when the holiday falls Monday to Thursday

Two holidays coming up add midweek Drive days. Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26. Both are on the District's list of holiday openings. Weather closures are announced on short notice, so check the District's recreation notices page the morning you go.

The Trailhead on Your Own Road

The Club at Bella Collina sits at 15920 County Road 455. The Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead is at 20700 County Road 455 in Minneola. It is a Lake County park and one of four trailheads on the Loop Trail.

The Loop Trail covers more than 20 miles along the lake's edge and is open to hiking, biking and wildlife viewing. For now it is an out-and-back route across the northern half of the lake. The District expects it to go all the way around eventually. Green Mountain has restrooms, as do the North Shore and Magnolia Park trailheads. There is no drinking water anywhere along the trail. Horses are not allowed at Green Mountain or Magnolia Park, since both are county parks.

Other ways onto the lake, depending on what you want to do:

  • Clay Island Trailhead, 22526 Carolyn Lane, Astatula: a 6-mile white-blazed loop for hikers, cyclists and riders, with four observation towers. One of them overlooks the lake's west shoreline.
  • West Marsh Canoe and Kayak Launch: paddle craft only, with catch-and-release fishing. Parking requires a free day-use permit from the District.
  • McDonald Canal Boat Ramp and North Shore Trailhead, 24600 County Road 448A, Mount Dora: launching for motorboats, canoes and kayaks.
  • Magnolia Park, 2929 S. Binion Road, Apopka: the Orange County trailhead on the east side, with a boat ramp and winter hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Orange County's park page notes ongoing road construction on South Binion Road.
  • Newton Park, 31 W. Garden Avenue, Winter Garden: listed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as a Lake Apopka shore and pier fishing spot.

December Is When the Work Is Due

Both the current closures and the best weeks ahead come from the same project list. The District has scheduled several jobs for completion by December 2026. They include regrading the Wildlife Drive for safer, smoother access and rebuilding several miles of slopes along the lakeshore to improve stabilization and wave attenuation. The District says most of the slope work is next to the Loop Trail. Also on the list are regrading the treatment wetland and Sand Farm areas and cleaning the Marsh Flow-Way pump basin to improve pumping efficiency.

The two-month window on the weekday trail closure points to the same end-of-year finish. The Columbus Day closure notice gave its reason as protecting recent roadway improvements, which shows the Drive's upgrades are already partly in place.

Orange Audubon Society's 11th annual North Shore Birding Festival runs Dec. 3 through 7, and registration is open. In the festival's schedule dated Sept. 29, several trips start from the access points listed above:

  1. Thursday, Dec. 3: "Waterfowl of Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive" from 2850 Lust Road, plus a kayak trip from the West Marsh launch at 24451 Blackhorse Trail, Astatula.
  2. Friday, Dec. 4: a Lake Apopka North Shore trip meeting at the McDonald Canal Pavilion.
  3. Saturday, Dec. 5: Big Day trips on the west side of the lake, and a photo walk at Oakland Nature Preserve, 747 Machete Trail, with a stop at Newton Park.
  4. Sunday, Dec. 6: Green Mountain Trail Hiking and Birding, meeting at 20700 County Road 455, plus birding by kayak from the McDonald Canal Boat Ramp.
  5. Monday, Dec. 7: "Best of Birding the Lake Apopka North Shore," meeting at the Wildlife Drive.

The Dec. 3 and Dec. 7 Wildlife Drive trips fall on a Thursday and a Monday. On those days the Drive's standard schedule keeps private cars out. The Sunday trip from Green Mountain is the closest festival outing to Bella Collina, starting from the same trailhead on County Road 455. Trip details can change after a schedule is published, so confirm on the festival site before you register.

Montverde's Calendar Lands on the Same Weekends

Montverde's own events fall on the days the lake is open. The 46th Annual Montverde Day Fall Music Festival runs Friday, Nov. 6, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Kirk Park, 17436 Division St. The Wildlife Drive gate closes to new entries at 3 p.m. that day, which leaves time for a morning on the Drive before the festival.

Light Up Montverde is Saturday, Dec. 5, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Town Hall, 17404 Sixth St. That is the Saturday in the middle of the birding festival, the same weekend the Green Mountain trip goes out, and the month the District has set for finishing the shoreline and Drive work. For Bella Collina, the first weekend of December lines up a lit-up town, a festival trip from the trailhead on County Road 455, and a Wildlife Drive whose regrading is due that month.

Lake Apopka is the backdrop to life at Bella Collina, and when its water, trails and timing change, so does what that view is worth. To talk through lakefront and hilltop properties around Lake Apopka, Speak With a Global Advisor at Nest Seekers Orlando.
